Joint Call for stronger recognition of R&I in agriculture and food

12 May 2026

EFFAB and FABRE-TP have joined a broad coalition of European Technology Platforms and agri-food stakeholders calling for stronger recognition of agriculture, aquaculture, and food systems as strategic sectors in EU competitiveness and research and innovation policies.

Since the publication of the original joint statement, additional organisations have joined the initiative. The coalition now brings together 5 European Technology Platforms (ETPs) and 24 agri-food stakeholders — a very clear signal of the sector’s united call for stronger support for agri-food research and innovation at EU level.

The statement, in fact, urges the European Parliament and Member States to ensure that agri-food is explicitly reflected in the European Competitiveness Fund (ECF) and the 10th Research and Innovation Framework Programme (Horizon Europe), with dedicated funding and balanced stakeholder involvement.

In a context of geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and economic transformation, investment in agri-food research and innovation is essential to strengthen Europe’s food security, resilience, sustainability, and strategic autonomy.
