Digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) in animal breeding and farming - 20 May 2025
The focus in farm animal breeding has traditionally been on responding to both farming and societal challenges. In recent decades, this has led to a shift towards more responsible and balanced breeding strategies that enhance animal welfare and health, reduce resource use and climate impact, and preserve genetic diversity.
While conventional breeding remains the norm, today, breeders also integrate advanced tools such as precision livestock farming technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and genomics to capture more sophisticated and complex data.
These tools improve the quality and accuracy of collected information, which in turn aids in better breeding and farming.
The event will explore the opportunities and challenges for farm animal breeding organisations and research institutions on:
- The importance of ownership, sharing and use of farm animal-related data
- The use of digital technologies to improve animal breeding
- The role of EU institutions in shaping strategies and policies to promote such opportunities
- Their competitiveness and their role in shaping the future of the livestock and aquaculture sectors
We're very excited to be joined by expert speakers:
🔹 MEP Paulo do Nascimento Cabral, European Parliament
🔹 Doris Marquardt, DG CNECT, European Commission
🔹 Dong Liu, KU Leuven
🔹 Michael Toscano, University of Bern
🔹 Hélène Soyeurt, University of Liège
