Joint letter of the agri-food chain on FSFS

12 May 2023

European agri-food chain organisations call for greater dialogue and cooperation with the European Commission in developing a robust, enforceable and effective EU Framework for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS). The letter welcomes the ambition to support the transition towards more sustainable food systems while emphasising that the framework should be holistic, science-based, inclusive and harmonised across the EU.

The signatories highlight key considerations including a clear and balanced definition of sustainability, an appropriate scope for the legislation, policy coherence, food and nutrition security, the international trade dimension, realistic transition costs and adequate support for food chain actors. They also stress the diversity and complexity of the European agri-food chain and call for its active involvement in shaping and implementing the future framework.
