EU Commission highlights breeding as part of the response to heatwaves
31 August 2026Europe is experiencing more frequent climate extremes, such as heatwaves and droughts, which create growing challenges for farmers, animals and agricultural production.
In its latest overview, the European Commission suggests both short-, medium- and long-term solutions to prepare for and adapt to increasing heat stress, ranging from farm management and water availability to technology, infrastructure and breeding.
In particular, EFFAB welcomes the Commission’s recognition of breeding and genetic selection as a medium- to long-term strategy to improve livestock resilience to heat stress.
Genetic improvement can contribute to helping livestock cope with increasing temperatures. By using genetic variation and selecting for resilience, breeding programmes can support animals that are better adapted to changing environmental conditions.
This is in line with Code EFABAR’s principles of responsible and balanced breeding, where traits such as animal health, welfare, robustness, fertility and longevity are considered alongside productivity. Maintaining genetic diversity is essential to help livestock populations adapt to future challenges.
