EFFAB on New Animal Breeding Techniques (NABTs)

EFFAB’s position paper explores the potential of New Animal Breeding Techniques (NABTs), including genome editing, to address key challenges facing European animal production, from animal health and welfare to resource efficiency, climate change and sustainability. It highlights how advances in genomics and genome editing could accelerate genetic progress and provide new tools to support farmers and improve the sustainability of livestock production.

The paper also emphasises the need for continued research and innovation, responsible use and appropriate ethical and food-safety safeguards. EFFAB calls for a clear and proportionate European regulatory framework that enables research and innovation while ensuring appropriate rules for the import, identification and traceability of genome-edited animals and products.
