EFFAB calls for science-based decisions on the future of Danish pig breeding

19 October 2026

EFFAB raises concerns about the assumptions underpinning the recent Danish government's Grisefirepart partnership and its work towards a long-term strategy for Danish pig production.

In particular, the assumption that larger litters lead to higher piglet mortality does not reflect the progress made through modern breeding strategies, which consider piglet survival, birth weight and maternal abilities alongside reproductive performance.

EFFAB believes that future policies on animal breeding must be grounded in scientific evidence, recognising the progress that balanced breeding programmes have achieved in improving both productivity and animal welfare.

EFFAB warns that regulations based on inaccurate assumptions could undermine further genetic progress, negatively affect Danish pig production and create barriers within the EU Single Market. We therefore call for an evidence-based approach that supports responsible breeding, animal welfare and a competitive, sustainable livestock sector.
