Breeding organisations

Structure industry

Farm animal breeding is organised on different levels: local, regional, national, international. The number and size of organisations differs per specie; ruminant organisations are fully present and cooperation is important, this is less in pig breeding, but not as little as in poultry and fish farming, where there are relatively few breeding organisations. Most of the organisations are SMEs. - Correct?? Global or EU..?

Breeding companies are large in the sense of market share but some multipliers have much larger turnovers than breeding companies. The specialized breeding sector has become  highly  competitive.  Many  companies  go  out  of  business  due  to  their  inability  to  survive  the competition or are taken over by other companies. - http://documents.plant.wur.nl/cgn/seminars/Worshop20100812/Nimbkar%20and%20Arendonk%20doc.pdf
Aquaculture
The aquaculture sector is a relatively young sector, with many global differences. The sector in Europe just provides 4 % of the global fish production. However, the production has increased with over 50% between 1990 and 2007. This production was mainly in the marine fin fish production, as freshwater production declined.

Ruminants
The number of primary breeding organisations  in the ruminant industry decreases, however, the size of the organisations increases. The small ruminant industry is less organised than the cow dairy and beef sector.

Cattle - dairy
Holstein is a dominating breed with 87% of calves born (in the Netherlands?). The dairy sector is dominated by CRV, a cooperation, the other big organisation is Alta Genetics, a privately owned organisation.

Pigs
The primary breeding sector of pigs sell parental stock and sperm mostly.
Poultry - broilers & layers
The poultry primary breeding sector is primarily owned by 3, transnational companies: Aviagen Broiler Breeders, Cobb-Vantress and Hubbard. The breeding selection industry has a very high level of concentration.
There are about 18 billion poultry in the world - 3% are breeding stock. The primary sector produces about 417 million parent stock per year.
[Broilers 3 companies, layers 2?? PHW-Gruppe?? Hendrix???]
Broilers
In the European Union are about 7500 million broilers produced every year. To produce that many broilers, there are about 60 million broiler breeders needed. The breeding companies sell grandparent stock mostly.
